lol, the way I imagined it, the little machine is a medical device that basically breaks down the alien into base components and rebuilds them from scratch. kinda a like last ditch catch all in case of emergency... too bad the original pilots were killed to fast to actually activate it! of course a human is completely foreign to the machine so it had to completely rewrite it and "fix" it into the proper shape.

That's... actually pretty plausible, given the right level of tech. You'd not want to use it for anything minor, but for the gravest of wounds, it'd give you a fighting chance. Cool idea.
Pity it didn't keep a backup...
