My father served on the USS New Jersey, before, and for the duration of the war. He spoke of the wooden decks and fed both the crew as a Ship's Cook, and the 16" guns from below decks during "Battle Stations".
Years later while serving on a WWII era submarine, the USS Cusk SS 348, I was called to the conning tower by the boat's
Commanding Officer, he told be to take a look through our main periscope. He knew of my father's service and wanted me to see a full side on view of the New Jersey with all three main batteries turned in our direction. We had been involved in exercises before she went to Viet Nam. I later served there as an Adviser on Vietnamese Coastal gunboats and was able to see the New Jersey off the coast.
Thanks for the memories, and thanks Dad. Rest in Peace.

cool! my father served on a ship that looked a lot like that. he was in the navy in the mid '50s. he was a radio man. he once told me that he went into the radio shack to do something or other and i was like...wait a minute,,,RADIO SHACK! that's were all the morse code and telegraph and obviously radio were all in there and that's where he worked. ramble!

he didn't, we listened to it on some bizarre AM radio stations and he could understand some of it. but he was in the navy when he was 17 and i was born when he was 29, so i think he forgot it all! not used much these days!
did he see combat? my father never did, luckily.
