Description

Submitted Summer 2023. Set two seasons after Echo started training among the Indas, following Business of Forgetfulness .

Some, she supposed, liked to work alone. It didn't matter much to Echo whether she had company or not; there were very few times in her life that it had. She had long since accepted her place among her packmates--too eccentric and discomfiting for most. Ever present, but willfully overlooked. Forgotten... Forgotten now more than ever before. All the same, to be forgotten required something and someone to forget. Others might work alone, but the magic that rested in her had little to do if she was. For that reason, if no other, Echo had taken to working more closely with her fellow wolves.

It was getting easier, now. Her own memory had always been vivid--the aftereffect of being such an observant creature, surely. Picturing something that she herself had witnessed was not itself a skill that required training. Feeding it to the void was another matter entirely. Sometimes it didn't go cleanly... sometimes a bit too much went. Still, she was slowly, bit by bit, learning how to fold the nothingness around those memories so that they faded from the minds of others... still, curiously, untouched in her own.

She heard the footsteps of the other Kol before they even harkened a greeting, and Echo turned to look over her shoulder as they approached. There was no greeting of her own, either, as she already let herself focus on their earlier conversation. It was a passing thing, really. She didn't think they would miss it... Not too much.

This month's community challenge theme is ARCHETYPE. Philosopher Carl Jung defined twelve primary types that symbolize basic human motivations. Each type has its own set of values, meanings and personality traits, and many characters from books, television and film can also be sorted into these archetypes. Which one best represents your character?

Echo is often an aloof and drifting character--true neutral by nature and not by her own voluntary creed. Still, all characters have motivations and desires. From the beginning, Echo has always been a truth-seeker and chased after the mysteries magic. Though she is not particularly ambitious in regard to power, her ultimate goal has always been to understand and witness the workings of Álmos. For better or worse, she cannot resist the call of the unknown. At worst, it makes her into a character which can be impractical, unfeeling, and apathetic with even her own well-being. She doesn't think twice before pursuing shadows or turning over stones that maybe she should have left unturned. As she now works to develop her magic, this presents an even more interesting dynamic with her personality. Now she has her own piece of what she's looked for since the beginning. However, a perfect fit for the Sage archetype, she wants to understand and use it for the sake of knowing alone. Her inherent emotional detachment in the search for knowledge could easily end up causing both harm and good as her magic grows stronger.
