Description This illustration came to be as my submission for the June 2021 art challenge of the Visual Arts Passage "Studio Bridge" program.
Participants were given the following challenge:
"The image should be a clothed figure in environment. The figure could also be a character from a book, game or an original character design. The final image can be developed for use as a book cover, game promotion, article or painting for gallery. (No type required)"
Based on this I took this as an opportunity to design a scene from a story I am creating around a character of mine who gets transported into my own world (that still very much is in its infancy at the time of uploading this...).
It would allow me to explore how I could portray the situation the character is in and how he feels at that moment as well as what the environment actually would look like!
Therefore the final result of this project ended up being the story of a young man, who had only very recently been transported to my own world, exploring the vast, almost infinite seeming woods around him. He has no idea where he is and what may be waiting for him out there, readying the bow and arrow he made himself with the skills his father taught him on their many hunting trips back home on Earth.
Originally when I started the sketching process for the four ideas of the first image (only three of which I ended up colouring before I found my way to the idea of what would become the final version....), I had not quite grasped yet what mood I really wanted to inject, what composition would work best, etc. .
With this project specifically a few bits of feedback made all the difference! I realized someone had pointed out something very important that would make the favourite of the four sketches (bottom left) an even better scene:
Perspective!
I attempted to re-adjust the perspective to have the viewer look up at the trees. That would create a situation in which the trees appeared very, very tall and I took this even further by not even hinting at the top of the trees being anywhere in sight in my image!
At least that is what I hope I managed to achieve! I would love to hear whether or not in your opinion I was successful in my endeavour and actually created the scene as I described it above!
