Description

---------------------------------

It took rather a longer while, but this one is finally finished..

From the first thoughts and view to realisation - as it turned out - it's a long long way.
So after all - finished effect is different than I expected.

Base was meant to be a temple floor with column ruins and polished surface. But standard 1" base couldn't accomodate that amount of debris and the floor was constantly escaping a clear vision of doing it. So instead we have typical pavement piece, which is way to thick, but well - I decided to leave it be (especially after green stuff dried).
There were supposed to be a Templar's cross at the back of the cloak - but it turned out that this is a freehand level yet to achieve.

ANd then painting and shading white...
It would be improved on next minis. In fact - white is one of the most difficult colours to shade - at least that, so it won't look like taken through a wet mud. Or changing it's colour to light tan.
White itself is much overexposed on those photos, but anyway - those shades you see are from paint, not from light.

Rest is okay I suppose. Main problem is, that it took me way too long to finish this guy, so I get impatient in the end.
Black armour turned out pretty good, maybe crosses are a little pretensional, but... they are anyway.

Generally - not much fun about the scheme, I kept to the GW way of painting them, like it was possible to do something else to keep Black Templar a Black Templar

And I'm pretty happy with the face - though I have to try other technique, however - on some next mini

Woow I like the cape! Good job! My only critique on this work would be that it looks kinda shiny but that could just be the picture though.

Thanks a lot!
Besides the photo is a little blurred, which I saw something like a month or so after postng And the "shiny" look is more exposed by the light that were at the time of shooting this one
I quite like the cape, though as you might read - I'm not fully satisfied

Again thanks a lot for comment!

Thanks!

I still think that "I did it wrong" in some parts, but seems that's only my very strict point of view And thanks for the !

The cross and the cloak are really well done!

Thanks!
I hope I can get a nice hold on the white in time But surely, there won't be much Dark Angels or Black Templars on my shelf So far I'm left with a limited Champion, which is intended to be BT. I think I'll move him down the line a bit

I like the look of the crosses - maybe a little resembling of German Iron Crosses during WWII but most of all I suppose they look like modern German aircraft insignia And it suits them

Nice mini... I very much like how subtle you painted the highlights and shading...

Thanks a lot!
I tried my best and used a lot of thin layers and inks. White and bright clothes are always a challenge...

I'm very glad you like it!

I had just about the same problem with an Imperial Captain (Warhammer Fantasy) I painted lately. Lots of white and red... Shading was quite a b**** with that mini, so I really know what good a paintjob you did on that SM... ^^

Thanks!
Red is also tricky - especially bright red... All in all I think yellow, white and red are three most difficult colors to shade proprerly - so they demand a lots of learning

I totally second that... But one gets better with every mini one paints...

Seriously, even though you've said you haven't reached a higher level of freehand, your skills with fine detailing is very good. Better a good portion I've seen stateside with Warhammer figs. I've seen some people play warhammer and don't even bother painting the figures. . .

Wish I could give you some freehand tips, but I have none really. I'm just used to paint cockpits and car dashes. But, if I had to do the cross on the cloak there, I'd draw it with short, small strokes- not try doing one long line in one stroke of the bush.

Thanks, that's good to hear!
I planned to do some nice pattern on the red side of the cloak, but firstly consulted with my girlfriend (well, she finished art school all in all ) and told me not to overdo

I always watch the unpainted figure for some time and wonder what can be painted and detailed. Besides I (maybe in vain) try to figure out how certain things could work (usually about weapons) and try to paint it acordingly
Guess that's the trait that I learnt making models

And about the cross... Black Templars have this funny, Maltese-like. There are slighlty angled lines. And you know - I NEVER could draw a star properly (and it's similar here) So maybe that's the case
I also tried to do an outline with a very soft pencil, but due to cloak folds and such - I never get it right Maybe next time on something smoother and plainer

But! Thanks for the tip, I'll keep him in mind and use while painting some next freehands
