Description The French & Indian War 1756-1763: As was pointed out under changing ownership of the continent, this war marked the low point of French dominion, which began in 1608 with the founding of Quebec, and finally extended over a vast territory from the Gulf of St. Lawerence to the Gulf of Mexico, at the back door of the English colonies. It is clear that a most dangerous situation had arisen, and in the middle of the 18th century, the struggle between France and England exploded into war. The French succumbed, and the end of the Seven Years' War on this continent was New France's death. This conflict also set the colonies on a course toward secession as the costs of war and the restrictions placed on settlers angered the growing tide of colonials seeking greener pastures beyond the Appalachian mountains.
