Description

The colonization of North America by the American Republic is part of a larger legacy of European colonial expansion between the 16th-20th centuries, the difference between Europe and the United States being that the American Empire spent the larger half of its existence securing the near abroad. It should be noted that the American Republic had a long and blood-soaked history in Central America and the Caribbean before moving to influence the whole of Latin America. The securing of raw materials and friendly regimes for the American Empire to trade with is a theme of American history and its ever-growing empire in the Western Hemisphere.

Little comprehensive language is used to describe the American Empire by the mainstream media platforms, though occasionally cloaked with moralist language by populists to ridicule a ruling administration. They always fail to capture the atrocities that accompany every American intervention in Latin America, the Pacific, Asia, and the Middle-East? Such actions are described as mistakes but never as crimes or even crimes against humanity. The United States is the first Empire of its kind to ensure that its imperialism is not directly tied to its conduct of state-craft. With this understanding of the global stretch of American imperialism in its history, we can better assess the validity of the American Republic’s claim to being as founding father Thomas Jefferson called it, an “Empire of Liberty.”

Was this empire consisting of a series of Caribbean islands, Pacific Archipelagos, and a canal zone whose connection permitted the American navy hegemony in its own hemisphere, an empire of Liberty? Regimes imposed on the peoples of the Philippines were infamous for their brutality, crushing the Filipino nationalist movements efforts at building an independent state, the US also engaged in an informal imperialism in Central America, reducing the Spanish republics of the region to protectorates. Puerto Rico, Alaska, and Hawaii both functioned as settlement colonies with a strong economic impetus for integration and colonization, both economically and demographically.
