Got this idea from who left an awesome comment about what could go down between King Vegeta and Prince Vegeta in The Guardian-Verse so I took the idea and altered it a bit. Granted he used SSJB in that version I used SSJ4. I'm debating on bringing the god forms into The Guardian-Verse but we'll see.

But yeah many of the surviving Saiyans in the Capital of Planet Vegeta had attained SSJ since they didn't really have too much to do. But that's about as high as many of them could get at the moment even after years of training.

So here's King Vegeta, thinking he's stronger than his son and then BAM! His son shows off the forms his father and the other saiyans have yet to achieve and (At this point in time) The Pinnacle of saiyan might (SSJ5 being the true pinnacle of Saiyan might in the Guardian-Verse but that has yet to be achieved yet so neither Vegeta knows about it).

In other words. Here was King Vegeta lightly training (By Prince Vegeta's standards) while his son had be battling various alien invaders and powered beings and having to adapt and train quickly for each threat and has had more close calls with death than even his mainstream counterpart has on several occasions.

Goes to show you can't become complacent. XD
