Monica Rambeau (not to be confused with action movie character John Rambo) was a harbor patrol Captain in New Orleans until she got hit with a hi tech energy weapon that, because comicbook reasons, didn't kill her and instead gave her the power to turn herself into energy as well as other, nifty energy-based abilities. ⁣

Having literally no connection whatsoever to the recently deceased Kree Captain Marvel, she still for some reason took his title and became the NEW Captain Marvel (I mean, he wasn't using it what with being dead and all).⁣

She joined the Avengers as a member-in-training, becoming a full and valued member soon after. Making her the first African American woman on the team. It wasn't long before she became team leader because black women are frickin' amazing and know how to run shit right. Kick ass, Monica!⁣
