Description FULL VIEW IS ***NOT*** DIAL-UP FRIENDLY!! ... but it has more details!

This is Icarus Faermownt, a character from the book I'm working on. He's an aeviahn of the Fiinex clan. Fiinexes are made when an unwanted egg is dropped into a volcano -- the aeviahn within retains the basic appreance of its parent clan, but not its colouring. Fiinexes have a higher normal body temperature as well, and when aroused, that temp goes up, high enough to potentially burn most other homonids. This makes them highly-sought-after bed-servants for the likes of rheptillians and other hominids with attributes that allow them to withstand a Feenix's Heat. Raised in an orphanage, it has become customary for them to be trained as massuess-concubines. Icarus, though, wants something else for his life: he wants to be a bard. He fights for the right to attend the Aveh Lohn University, where he meets Hestia Frijia, a Wulphaeran girl -- as in, "not a rheptillian" -- whom he falls for. But how can he get close to her without hurting her?...

Of course, he has a friends-with-benefits tryst with a roomate or three in the meantime. Ho-Yay!

I plan on doing pin-ups of all the characters. The first one was of Drokkan Un'Sealy, and you can see it here: www.deviantart.com/deviation/2…

I had originally started this piece with a different pose -- was using an assortment of photo refs because I couldn't find one that was quite what I wanted -- but it was crap. So I sketched this one out, sans the use of any ref, while watching TV, and realised that, while it wasn't the view I'd intended and I wasn't a hundered percet sure of the anatomy, it was much better looking than the one I was originally doing (and hey, he's an alien, so who says the anatomy has to be just like a human's? ^_~). Sooo I scrapped the other and scanned this in. I used a photoref of an osprey for the wings. I'm not as pleased with the background (the perspective just doesn't seem right, and it's a bit sloppy) but it's as good as it's gonna get, methinks (it was much worse earlier! )... As for the lighting, well, he's in an enclosed space with a lot of reflected light (my excuse for not wanting to spoil his colours with a lot of shadowing -- although he should have ripple-lights on him too, then, like on the walls. I tried it, and it just didn't look right ...) Oh, and before you ask, Ickie's hair is feathery (but strong), so that's why it be stringy an' blowin' all over de place, nes pas? There should have been people around him, like in the book, but I was lazy, and I didn't want to detract from him. I'm very pleased with how Icarus himself turned out, at least. Let me enjoy it for a while, cause I'll probably hate it tomorrow ...

Aside from the initial skecth, everything done in Photoshop Elements with a Wacom Graphire 3 drawing tablet. About 20-25 hours of work, altogether.

That is the most insane amount of color I have seen in a long time. And it's AWESOME! ^^ I love how wild his hair is, and the whole story concept sounds really neat. I love how his wings turned out, and his makrings are pretty cool. Also, the skin looks like a blending of a LOT of colors, am I off on that, or are there really a bunch of colors mixed together for that effect?

Thankee!

What you might be seeing is the fact that I used the "noise" filter on his skin after I painted him, to give it a sparkly effect -- that adds little dots of colour to it. In actuality, it's mostly just two shades of the same orange, black, and white, and then it was gone over with the colour-dodge tool. That's it, no blues, purples, or greens, and I didn't mix the red and yellow individually to get the oranges, I just chose the shades I wanted from the colour-picker. Basically I had four colours-swatches on my palette -- six if you include the light yellow-orange and the red-orange the colour-dodge tool gave me. And that's probably more explanation than you wanted, LOL!

No! That was awesome! xD I always wondered what the noise thing did, and now I know, thanks a ton!

Wow, Wolfie! You just get better and better. I actually like the middle closeup best, because it shows Icarus in more detail and you don't notice the background as much (you're right... it's a bit flat. Backgrounds just are NOT as fun to colour as people) because there's more focus on Icarus. I love the contrast of colours, and he's all bronzey and orangey and stuff.

Oh, and the description made me laugh a lot, because I'm a geek like that. "Fiinex," "rheptilian," "Aveh Lohn," "Aeviahn".... hahaah.

Really good job on the anatomy, and the lighting and all that technical stuff. His blue tattoos (they are tattoos, right?) are really pretttty... makes me want tattoos.... Yeah, I like him a lot. Fuzzy hair.

I know my zoological Latin and mythology.

I want some of that permanent body-paint stuff now. Let me know when you start marketing it to the public.

Man, I can't do impressionistic stuff at all. I'm too detail oriented. I have no idea how those guys did it... random splotches of colour that actually form an image from a distance. I would fail if I lived in the time period that that was the big, popular thing to do.

Awww, thankee muchly! #^_^# You're the second person today say I'm improving -- gods, I hope so, I have to have something to show for being unemployed. XD Maybe someday, with enough practice and (pixie dust), I'll get good enough that someone will actually pay me to do it on an ongoing basis! *crosses fingers*

Yeah, I put the big close-up up cause I like how Ickie's face and body turned out, but ultimately the image as a whole is meant to be viewed just a bit more than the middle size at the max. Kinda like many paintings in museums, especially impressionist ones -- they look great from like ten feet away, but when you look up close, they're full of a lot of squiggles -- they got that whole Gestalt thing goin' on. Although even from a distance, this background is flat-ish XD

Heee, I'm glad someone appreciates my naming conventions! Of course, knowing one's zoological Latin and mythology helps *G*

The markings are permanent body-paint -- brighter than tats and no needles! ^^ Gotta love science fiction possibilities!

Thankee! #^^# While I think most art should be done for the artist first and others second, it's still nice to see others appreciate all the hard work that goes into someting like this!

At closer look the hair is a bit sloppy (only at the closes look, though... in small it seems cool). The wings, oh the wings! Those are bloody amazing! I bet that part took you hours and hours, but it's so detailed! :gasp: I also like the body-paint, very sexy

WolfenM In reply to AgiVega [2006-06-07 01:10:54 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I hate doing hair >_< The wings started out being frustrating to do, but I began to have fun with it after a while, especially when I got to the red-pink-orange parts (I did the yellow first). Surprisingly, I only spent about six or seven hours on them altogether, I think, maybe less. And glad you like the tattoos -- I kinda made them up as I went along!

Thanks for the !
