The extinct species wouldn't have fit in with this project, alas, but I was happy to get the Sumatran rhino in there because their slightly fuzzy and reminded me of the woolies. : D

I saw your art, I liked it. A question, When you sculpt what kind of materials do you use? (I hope I was clear)

well thank you. : )
Well, I'm a very mixed media type of person when it comes to the random sculptures I've made, so I use all sorts of materials depending on which one you are asking about.
The most recent stuff I've done (since living in an apartment makes a welder and metal chop saw kind of impossible) is just using Sculpey. Great stuff. For shaping things I just use my fingers to get the basic shape, and since my finger nails are longish I can do some details and linework without any other tools. Often something like the backend of a paintbrush to get in to hard to reach areas can be useful too. And of course when making anything out of Sculpey it's nice to start with a wire frame 'skeleton' and bulk up the shape a bit with tin foil before you use the actual Sculpey.
But in the past I've done bronze casting using the lost wax technique, and a lot of random found object mashed together goodness. Hot glue guns are my friend for those. I've also done metal sculptures using rebar, or stainless steel, welded together.
Like I said, lots of random things. : )

You are a versatile artist. Is the lost wax technique expensive? Does it work on man sized scultpures?

Wolfsjal In reply to fotostomias [2010-02-24 16:29:43 +0000 UTC]
The lost wax process for casting does end up being expensive in the end, mostly because the wax and bronze definitely add up. You also need plaster or to take it somewhere to get a ceramic shell. And of course you need a crucible and all that good stuff, or access to one.
It's possible to make very large bronze sculptures, but it takes a LOT of planning and would have to be assembled in pieces welded back together. It would also be way too expensive. Or at least I find so. The largest bronzes I ever made were just under a foot long, hollow of course.

Thank you. How much did you spend in produtcion for your bronzes (-1´long)? I hope the questions doesn´t bother you.
I am a sculptor myself, but never tried the lost wax process, but I already have some wax to make a try.
Thank again

hm, I really don't remember.
You generally buy bronze by the ingot, and the price varies from year to year. The first year I bought some was a fair bit less than two years later when I did the bigger pieces.
Best bet is probably to call around at metal places and see what you can find.
I've spent far too much money on various projects over the years that I was in art school, alas. XD
I hope you do give it a try! It was a lot of fun and I'd love to do some bronze casting again some day.

Did you sculpt it on the wax? Or did you sculp it on clay and then made a silicon cast to pour on it the wax? Shame that you are a few thousands of miles from here, I would love to see your work personally, may be, in thet way I would know how does that work. I´m pretty sure that The bronze sculptures are far more valuable that the resins casts... Right?

Most people sculpt out of clay first, then make a mold for the wax version. You can alternatively sculpt the wax but it can be a bit trickier to work with.
For the horses that I made, I actually made them out of paper and tape (which would burn away with the melted wax) and then just coated them in brushed on wax.
I have a whole series of images in my gallry of the entire process for those pieces. Starting here: [link]

And here's a neat shot of the piece just after being busted out of the shell, and the metal sprues cut away. You can see how many areas don't always fill the way they should, and need repair. Next to it is the finished piece for comparison. All those holes had to be welded in, the cut off sprues had to be ground down, and the texture repaired to look like it had always been that way. And yeah, I'd say a bronze cast is a lot more valuable. But might also be a lot harder to sell. Not everyone is willing to pay what they are worth.

*laughs* I didn't even know there were that many species of rhino, let alone how to make them all fit on one card in a half decent looking composition.

lol, i had to look up what an eejit was - should have just pronounced it : ). probably gonna incorporate that into my speech now. oh, yes, i liked it - doubt you needed me to confirm that. don't know where i became a.. rhino-lover, but i am one. oh, i didn't just like it - i think they look great.
and p.s. i'm sure i'm being retarded, but is that my rhino on top? i can't find an actual rhino with the secondary horn that looks like that except for the rhino you drew me : ). laterz.

lol, yeah.. I say eejit a lot, because of my Irish character. And it definately just needs to be spoken aloud.
*laughs* Other way around, actually. Your rhino dude was mostly based on him, the white rhino. Though I added a few black rhino features and generally just bad-ass-ified the were-rhino.
The white, black, and sumatran are all two horned, while the javan and indian only have the one.
