This hereby begins my yearly barrage of Halloween illustrations.I'm trying something different with my cut-out style on this one. I did all of the shading with pastels on a single piece of white cardstock. I did an earlier version using pencils instead of pastels, but it wasn't nearly as successful.

haha. Did you think it in a Shaft voice too?
I did actually consider using black with white on it, but I wasn't sure how well the skull would work.
Now I'm working on one of the headless horseman. I think the black with white on it would work quite well for that.Β

And that is why you would want to speed up the film and put music to it.

You did amazingly awesome at the feathers!!! The subtle shading in the skull is also nice

Thanks! I really REALLY wasn't sure how those feathers were going to turn out. I tried another version where I painted it with India ink, and it looked like rubbish. And when I tried it with pencils there wasn't nearly enough contrast. haha. I think that pastels are a happy medium.

Thanks! Yeah, I'm quite pleased with how the pastels turned out. It was all very experimental for me, and I couldn't even see how it was going to look as a whole until I put it together. I was pleasantly surprised.Β

I think the most striking element of this is the crows dead white eye. It really cranks up the creepiness factor.

Thank you! I'm quite pleased with the pastels. They give it a bit of texture (and contrast) that I couldn't get with the pencils, even though I was using a really soft one. I am thinking that charcoal might work even better, but I didn't have any.

I hate throwing out my art supplies. I'm convinced that I will need them years later. I still have colored glass from when I took glassblowing during my undergraduate years.
