That's a really cool idea to have a character have a fave genre of music. Anyone can get what kind of personality they have just by what their preference is in music. Like for one of my year old characters Marley Allaire, I had her music genre be a mix of alternative, grunge, and indie. To contrast her taste in music, Quentin Featherling likes classical and jazz. It's awesome having characters that have quirks like that.

That's a good place to start when creating a character's personality, especially ones for your own original stories. I based Max's liking that Prince song based on my headcanon that Lance has a guilty pleasure of liking 80s music and 80s/90s movies (Back to the Future, Rocky, Scarface, Rambo, and Terminator come to mind), so he would have such music on his ipod along with more modern musicians like Beyonce, Ed Sheeran, etc. He lets Max listen to his music collection, to satisfy her curiosity for Earth music. When I listened to other music on youtube, I started to imagine that the singing voice of Peter Hollens reminds her of her dad-who used to sing to her and her sisters (especially w/ "The Hanging Tree" and Prince of Egypt covers), and if she watched Steven Universe, she'd feel a bit of a connection with Blue Diamond, not just because of her voice sounding as she remembers her mother's, but the feeling of grief for losing someone she was close to (and maybe even was in love with once) never going away.
