Description Something a little different but with some "Raatu".

So I illustrated Raava and Vaatu with colors true to the Yin and Yang philosophy, along with the idea that when these spirits came to be, they were never enemies. Raava was once a dark spirit and Vaatu a light spirit. In fact, they lived harmoniously (think Tui and La but much bigger and more powerful) and Harmonic Convergence was never a battle, it was what exactly the words mean, to "Harmoniously Coverge" or become one (The part where Wan and Raava create Avatar Spirit got that right). Harmonic Convergence was just a cosmic event where they rejuvenated their roles and began anew. But when Vaatu breaks the barriers between the two worlds, it changed him for the worst, basically "lobotomizing" him. He grew power hungry and started to (literally) grow dark. This affected both him and Raava, altering their appearances, giving each one 2 yin colors and 2 yang colors, making them even more out of balance. Raava tries to calm Vaatu and keep him under control but struggles to appease her counterpart. She begins to miss what he once was, he was never evil, when he broke the barriers, it corrupted him, he lost sight of what his true purpose was and wanted control, viewing Harmonic Convergence as what it is now, an opportunity to destroy what really can't be destroyed anyway and have the power he craved. So Raava accepts her role as the light and order spirit and constantly tried to control Vaatu, aware of what he's capable of. I kindof think at one point she "lost" to Vaatu and re-emerging from him affected her perspective of her role as well, but deep down inside, she remembers what he once was. They lose touch with eachother and who they truly are...which would have made an interesting parallel for Korra. Fast forward some thousand years later, she tries to restrain him and Wan intervenes. This theory was created by , I just find it fascinating.

Also remember when Unalaq says "there are no evil spirits" just those that have become corrupted and need to be purified? Yeah it foreshadows the finale but it also makes sense with this theory...

Good theory but If Raava got rebooted after getting destroyed wouldn't she turn back to her original form same with Vaatu?

I'm not sure exactly. Either would likely revert to their greatest level of power but appearance isn't in their original form. I think if Raava would have lost to a "corrupted" Vaatu and re-emerged from him, Vaatu would still be the same and I think Raava would as well given his state.

That's the saddest theory ever. But give me a million more sad theories and I think I'll break down to tears? (Literally)

This is wonderful to look at. And now for the real reason this comment exists:

HEADCANNON ACCEPTED!

The colors are fitting for their original purposes as they weren't inherently good or evil per se, but just balance incarnate.

Exactly! If you liked this, then you should check out more of 's works about Raava and Vaatu as she also creates these awesome theories about them.

Well, this depiction of them is really pretty; it has a nice style to it.

And of course, pairs nicely with the theory.

Though...I'm pretty sure their colors are evenly balanced in the present. White is yang (warm, a yang trait) while blue is yin (cool, a yin trait), while black is yin (cool) and red is yang (warm).

I guess in this depiction, their colors are more divided into 2/3rds representative color, 1/3rd opposite color.

That makes sense and still makes things interesting, I mainly wanted to focus on the backstory theory and a touch a bit on Raava's inverted love sock.

Yeah, I get that

I like that "inverted love sock" seems to be an actual term now...
