Nafisa Al-Hashim was born in the mid 1700's to a poor family in Morocco. In her early teens, she ran away from home and stowed away on a ship that was leaving port. Unbeknownst to her, the ship she stowed away on was a pirate ship under the employment of the Ottoman Empire and found herself thrust into servitude under the pirates. As she reached adulthood, she gained their trust and eventually became one of them, joining them on raids of merchant ships, eventually becoming captain once the previous one perished from a musket wound. Now as captain, she flexed her nautical muscle and continued her maritime raids, collecting vast bounties of wealth from stealing vessels and their valuables, the capture and enslavement of Christians and the ransoming of high value targets. She became hedonistic, buying luxurious clothes and indulging in alcoholism. However, in the beginning of the 19th century, her actions caught the scorn of the newly founded United States of America and in 1802, her ship was attacked by US marine forces. Nafisa put up a hard fight as her ship was raided and burning around her, but eventually she was shot multiple times with musket fire and fell dead into the waters, her crew slaughtered and ship burned down.

Nafisa woke up in Hell surrounded by the violent seas of the Circle of Envy. Before she could understand her situation, she was captured by pirates belonging to the Sea People clan. She had her chest branded and put to work under the deck. Nafisa would stay like this for a long time before the ship was attacked by Prince Leviathan, granting her the opportunity to escape, but not before snagging an artifact belonging to the Sea People captain. Known as Neptune's Rage, it granted her the unique ability of electrokinesis and allowing her body to shift into a more agile mermaid form when making contact with water. Escaping Envy and arriving at Lust, she met John Ryker, a rat sinner who would become her business partner in the underground and a close friend. As their smuggling empire grew, they attracted unwanted attention from far ancient syndicates and soon had to abandon it or face annihilation. But not all was lost as the fallen angel Vendetta came to them with an opportunity of safety from their criminal enemies and the possibility to leave Hell entirely. Taking up such a generous offer, Nafisa and John joined the Brimstone Brigade, with Nafisa serving as the maritime expert and the sneaky blade of the Brigade.
