Description The reign of Alexander Severus, last emperor of his dynasty, was not exempt from paradoxes.
Very popular at the beginning, he ended up assassinated by his legions.
Successful in moralizing his empire, he couldn't enforce the same discipline on his soldiers.
In peace for a few years, Rome spiraled back into war during the 230s.
Arsacids had been overcome by a new aggressive dynasty, the Sassanid Persians.
Soon, they attacked the Romans and inflicted them several defeats.
In Europe, Germanic tribes were boiling as well. Alexander did what he thought reasonable : bribing.
It was a fatal error. In 235, after 13 years of reign, he died in Mogontiacum (modern Mainz).
A military crisis was beginning... Rebellions, plots, assassinations plagued Roman History in this mid-3th century...
Particularly the year 238 that saw no less than 6 emperors succeed on the throne...
The Legio III Augusta, based in Africa, took part in these tragic events and was dismantled in summer 238...
Some territories would be lost... The defense of Africa weakened...
