Description sorry for the low quality - we only stopped for a moment and did not disembark from the bus

Monument dedicated to the firefighters who died fighting with fire that engulfed reactor building no. 4 on April 26th 1986. It was designed and funded by their surviving colligues, and set in front of the Chernobyl Fire Station.

The monument presents seven figures, the number of firefighters who died as a result to radiation exposure at the reactor building. Some liberties were taken, however, by adding a person that was much needed, but absent, during the first hours of the disaster - a dosimetrist (to the left, with a long Geiger counter's rod in hand). This was done to commemorate the radiation detection teams that often ventured first into contaminated regions soon after the tragedy, to prepare maps for the liquidators that showed the most dangerous areas. Also, behind the dosimetrist, there is a fire truck driver, also commemorating those who risked their lives by ferrying personel and materials into the contamination zones, often several times.

The tangled mass at the bottom symbolised nuclear fuel rods, melting from the raging heat, and the inscription below the maquette of the power plant's iconic chimney, says "To those who saved the world".
