He's a magical panther, not a regular animal (a magical animal companion, Elrilia's a ranger/cleric) and he wears enchanted jewellery to keep him alive.
Because as awesome as he is, he'd die pretty fast against the things Elrilia goes up against without SOME magical help.
(Actually, without HER magical items, she'd not do so hot either. Ah magic.)
