Description Standing in the ruins of the lost Northern Kingdom, the Dunadan contemplates what once was and what seems impossible to regain.

The tragedy of the waning might of the Numenorean exiles always grabs me.

Third installment of my Rangers of the North series.

Based on the writings of J.R.R. Tolkien.

Inspired by a picture ([link] ) of my friend David taken by his wife Cheryl posted on .

Maybe I'll touch up some parts, but for now I'm done. Must sleep!

Wow, you could have pulled this scene directly out of my MERP campaigns!Β  Always did like old Dunedain ruins, and my players learned to both love and hate them. The dark-clad ranger (based on your well-garbed friend) looks properly pensive and roguish. I like his southpaw-worn longsword and his sizable pouch!

Ah, sweet MERP. That's a few years ago. Love that game. Now we play Song of Ice and Fire, which is a very good system (in my opinion).

I will have to try that game out at a gaming con sometimes, if you think it is good.

Haunting image, the ruins of a lost civilization. Great detail. I assume this is Fornost, capital of Arthedain, destroyed by the forces of Angmar before the army of Gondor arrived to help.

Thanks. Glad you like it.

It could very well be. I always assumed it would be Annuminas, but Fornost might be more 'realistic' since its location would be nearer the lands he'd be patrolling.

Another fine piece. I particularly like how you juxtapose the statue on one side of the wall with the living ranger on the other side.Β  Sort of showing what was and what is.

Oh, another gorgeous Tolkien piece by you! I'm into Ranger stuff right now, so I was quite pleased to discover this newer piece in your gallery. What to say, it's exquisite as usual, especially the detail which seriously had me check if the description doesn't say 'photomanipulation' by chance. And yay for the character being a leftie, there are not many of them in Tolkien illustrations. ^ ^
I hope to see more of this series!

Merci Noleme, the lefty is my buddy I was inspired by a photo of him. No photomanip, just painting Glad you like it. There are bound to follow more. Dunedain rank high on my favorites list

As they do on mine. Out of curiosity, will any named characters follow in the future? I've noticed some Silm. characters in your gallery, so it had me wonder if you'll portray Strider or the others at some point.

woutart In reply to noleme [2012-10-31 07:56:28 +0000 UTC]

Maybe, but putting a face on big characters like Aragorn can be tricky. I've been influenced by so many media over the years it's hard to find my own vision. I'd like to do the Grey Company though, Halbarad being their captain until they reach Aragorn. I always found them to be imposing. Maybe a scene of their journey to the south will make a fine piece

woutart In reply to chrome-mate [2012-07-09 07:58:35 +0000 UTC]

Exactly. The elves are sort of emotionally unreachable, where the Dunedain have this very human down-to-earth like struggle to survive. I like that.

I love the somber atmosphere of this piece! The muted tones and colors, set off by the flesh tones of the ranger, really pull one into the focal point of the composition. And, very cool clouds!
