Description
This is a baby Javan green magpie (kraska krátkoocasá jávská, Cissa thalassina) from zoo Prague, Czech Republic.
This song bird is very rare in its natural habitat, being threatened by illegal pet trade and loss of environment (only 50-250 individuals!), and as it is incredibly beautiful creature, it became a symbol of the new paneuropean zoo campaign "SILENT FOREST."
Zoos also started captive breeding program to preserve the species and establish a healthy numerous population in captivity.
Only few zoos keep this wonderful bird - zoo Prague is one of them and they already bred.
The baby, which hatched in zoo Prague, had to be hand-fed. And to avoid imprinting humans, the baby was fed with a puppet which featured the most significant face markings of the adults. That helps the baby bird to understand what species they belong to!
