Mira's first aging quest.

“Were you afraid? In the forest?”
Mira nodded. Of course she had been afraid.
Kaffir could smell the fear rolling off the tiny calf. “I’m sorry,” he said. “Ma won’t be coming back.”
Mira dipped her head again. “I know,” she said, mumbling. “The styraco already explained it.”
“And did you understand it?”
She shook her head and Kaffir sighed, nudging her closer. “Come here,” he said, tucking her into his side. “I’ll show you how to hide, so that even if the raptors come, they won’t find you.”
Her tiny body was trembling, and kaffir nosed her chest.
“It’s okay,” he said. “The herd is here. They can’t get to you. Now look- tuck yourself into the grass, tightly- see?”
Mira folded herself into a ball in the golden grass, her thin shoulders stretching her skin- it looked painful. Kaffir took a moment to look at her, to digest everything that had happened in the last few hours.
Mira trembled.
“Good job,” he said quietly, pushing his nose against her crest. “That will keep you safe.”

The dialogue is a bit of a spiritual successor to A Tragic First Meeting
