A haunting darkness; a sense of oppression captured.

I really love this photo, but i would like to see it with no texture i think it takes away from the composition.

Thank you for your feedback!
Answering your remark, this is how it looked before I added the texture: [link] At this stage it felt somewhat incomplete to me. The composition is cleaner, that's true, but I find other aspects to be flawed and they were practically impossible to fix due to the noise (for example, the picture being too dark or a having lot of large flat areas of the same brightness, which I think didn't work too well in this case). That's why I decided on the version with texture.

I personally love the original a lot more! I don't think the image as a whole is to dark, but i think it needs some slight dodging in the clouds to give it a definite highlight.

Yes, I agree. Although I tried it and maybe I could go with it, but I didn't like the result because of the noise.
Nevertheless, thank you for your insight once again. It's nice to discuss with somebody who knows how things can be done!

Howdya do it?

Writto In reply to Solar-Love [2013-05-28 16:56:11 +0000 UTC]

Long story short, I converted a colour shot into black and white, played with brightness, contrast and similar stuff and then added a colour texture to it.
(Texture has a story of its own. )

Cool. Love the effect. Love the texture too, looks almost like a shot of concrete or leather? You don't have to say if you don't want to haha.

Nah, it's no big secret. It's a worn-out cover of an old book I borrowed from the university library. (I mean... a photo of the cover, not the cover itself. I'm not a vandal. ) I don't know what is the material it's made of, but it's not leather (let alone concrete) for sure ;)

The texture looks good, but I think it is a bit too dominant in this photo.

Writto In reply to insolitus85 [2013-05-28 09:51:12 +0000 UTC]

That may very well be true. Does this version look better? [link]
You see, it's sort of a compromise... the original photo has some irreparable flaws, which start being more visible after I lower the texture's opacity - not to mention that it looses its colours and changes the balance of the whole.

I am well aware of the changes that it brings, especially when the texture is coloured. Finding the right balance is not always easy.

The new version does look better in my opinion!
