Origin:
Hart’s parents met and feel in love while his father (Brian Mathews) was a marine stationed in the Philippines. While there Brian met and fell in love with Carman. Carman’s parents were accepting of the relationship. The young lovers soon wed and Hart was conceived.
Brian was going to take Carman and their expected child, back to the states with him. But tragically, Brian was killed when the marines were called in to assist in stopping a civil riot. After Brian’s death Carman revealed that she was pregnant. Brian’s father did not approve of his son’s marriage and he disowned Carman and the baby, but Brian’s mother (Susan) was different. She secretly arranged for Carman to come to the states. When Brian’s father found out, he divorced Susan.
Susan took her maiden name, and helped Carman raise her grandson. With his mother and grandmother, Hart grew in a loving environment. Hart was not hidden from the prejudice that has revolved around his life, but he was taught that there are those like his mother and father who could see past the hatred. Hart was raised to think of his father as a hero who was devoted to his country and goodness in general. Hart wanted to become such a man.
Upon puberty, Hart discovered that he had within him a mutant genetic factor that gave him the ability to transform his body or parts of his body into black organic steel. He revealed his ability to his grandmother and mother. They encouraged him to do with his abilities as he felt right, but to also be careful to conceal his identity because there would always be some who would hate him despite the good that he could do.
While still in his senior year of high school, Hart won a writing contest on “what America means to you”. A part of the prize was to be flown to Washington D.C. along with the other contestant winners to meet the President. A lone gunman, for unknown reasons, chose this as an opportunity to try to assassinate the President. The assassin was no amateur. Before going for the President he picked off his two guards. After dispatching the bodyguards he zeroed in on the President. He shot but the bullet did not find its mark. Hart had jumped in the way of the bullet while in his metallic form. He kept the president safe until more security arrived.
At first Hart was scared because he revealed his powers in such a public manner. His powers made it very hard to identify him visually, but since only so many people were present at the time it would not be difficult to figure out his identity. However, the President quickly relived him of his fears. The President was extremely grateful and saw a great deal of potential in the young man. He made a proposition to Hart and Hart eagerly agreed.
After Hart completed school he entered a top-secret program that was purely designed to train him in the use of his abilities to become a superhuman agent for the American government. Through his training he became exactly what he wanted to be, something his father would have been proud of.
As Battalion, Hart fights for truth, justice, and the American way. But his viewpoint does not include discrimination. He is very public concerning his ethnicity, and it is well known that he does not tolerate racism. When Star-Born addressed the United Nations on his desire to create a league of global guardians (The United), Battalion was the first representative chosen for the US government.
