after the twins' mother had 4 miscarriages at 39 she had the twins. the couple was ecstatic that they would finally be blessed with two girls. they had worked for this for years. but by the time they were born, the twins' father was disgusted, feeling has is he made a mistake and left the family. though the mother was shocked she loved the child as her own. the twin's mother kept them from the world and never let them outside the confines on their home and backyard. the twins were homeschooled by their mother.

as a single parent their mother was often at work, leaving them to study, read or watch television. at 11 they meet a boy who was 12. he was a paperboy named paul that didn't care that the twins were "different". they would write letters to each other and had an awkward secret love. normal they would talk by sneaking the boy into there house and talk over tea or watching tv. he'd often bring comics for the twins to read. one comic, spiderman issue 1 was the first paul ever gifted was treasured by marie. paul was their only window to the outside world. when they turned 16 they planned to run away and get married. the twins' mother found out and restricted the girls even more. their mother barred their windows and locked them in the upstairs, saying it was for their own good.

around the twins 17th birthday their mother was diagnosed with lung cancer. though she didn't get treatment because to her caring for her children is much more important. she sound died leaving the children on their own. they tried to meet up with paul but soon found out that he had moved to nyc for university. the twin hitchhiked to los angeles and got a job as a janitor at a hotel and a living space in the boiling room. they work everyday for money to get train tickets to nyc.
