“yo. dude. you up?”
dallas nudged the sleeping lavaling gently with their hoof again. they hadn’t really planned on stopping for anyone on their way to cedar plaza, but the kid in front of them was shivering and seemed kinda out of place. it looked like snow had started to pile onto them, too.
“y-”
eight eyes shot open and locked onto dallas. the lavaling sprang up and promptly fell over backwards in their attempt to back away. what previously had looked like snow continued to billow around their neck and hooves like a cloak.
“who-oa! that’s cool. how’d you get eyes like that?”
eyes [could they call the lavaling eyes? they were going to call them eyes. until they got a real name, at least.] stayed silent. they looked around wildly, but remained frozen in place. dallas suddenly perked up.
“oh dude, are you wild or somethin?? that’s really cool. i’ve always wanted to meet someone like-”
they stopped themselves halfway through.
“i mean, that’s cool i guess.”
they didn’t want the other lavaling to think they were lame or anything. they weren’t lame.
all eight eyes stared at them blankly. they had no idea what was going on. dallas was confused for a moment before it clicked. if the other was wild, they probably wouldn’t know language, or something like that. it also clicked that the kid looked like they could keel over at any moment and probably shouldn’t just be wandering around outside. they paused to think.
“okay uhh.. wanna come with me dude? i got a cool place where you can eat. and have a bed. stuff like that.”
no understanding.
“you know, like.. you-”
dallas pointed at the lavaling.
“-walk-”
they imitated walking away.
“-with me. to a house?”
they then pointed at themselves and drew their best approximation of a floryan home in the snow. it was mostly just a round square, really. eyes turned their head to the side, staring at the drawing. well, movement was a start at least.
“so?”
dallas took a step forward. eyes shrank back. they breathed like a cornered animal.
“come on man, you gotta work with me here! don’t you want, like, a shelter or something? food? y’know, eat?”
eyes shivered. dallas let out a long, exasperated sigh.
“okay, whatever dude. freeze then.”
they rolled their eyes and turned to continue their little trek to the plaza. so much for trying to be helpful.
after a few minutes, they heard the crunch of snow behind them. some small part of them was relieved, but they didn’t express that. they turned their head to look, and the eight-eyed lavaling stood perfectly still again.
“you gonna follow me then?”
silence.
“right. no sounds. okay, but you’ll have to come with me to town first. i wanna buy stuff.”
eyes’ gaze flicked to the snow beneath them, which was slowly melting away at the heat of their lamps. they tentatively picked up their hoof, pointing at themselves, then at dallas, all in quick, stiff movements. dallas sighed again. somewhere, they were happy that the other had made some attempt to communicate. they turned back around and kept walking.
“yeah man, i got that much. come on.”
it was another minute or two before they heard the strange lavaling resume following them. they continued to act somewhat annoyed but enjoyed the company as the two made their way through the frosted woods, only the shuffle of hooves breaking up the quiet.
