My entry for Wild-Hearts competition. ♥ Too good to pass up.
I'm extremely proud of this entry - it took around 2-3 hours to finish and I attempted several new things!

Soo... I am in love with both Maisy and Champs as characters in the TotH comic. There-following my extremely deep thoughts went as such: Champs + Maisy =
I don't know who Maisy's mate is, mentioned here [link] . But because her relations on her reference form are listed as "unknown" I decided to ignore that VERY IMPORTANT bit of information in the comic and get into the full "What If?" spirit for Wild-Hearts competition. xD Hence my what if: "What if Maisy and Champs fell in love, and escaped together?"
Maisy struck me as alert and the kind of horse that always knows what's going on. So when Champs gets taken by Flash's herd - I had to do something that involved the two of them! Neither wants to be under Flash's leadership. It seemed to me that an escape attempt would come naturally.

I also wrote a short accompanying dialogue, taking place shortly after where the comic currently is and Flash has proven his point to Vincent:

Maisy crept through the brush as quietly as she could. After Flash had made an example of Vincent - she wasn't eager to get caught breaking the rules. But she was blessed by the fact that Vincent was on guard duty that night. He was too much of an oaf to catch her and she'd slipped past the Clydesdale with ease.
Her ears pricked forward to navigate in the dark, Maisy looked for the prisoner. He was from Darko's herd. He had to know what had happened to Rose. Flash hadn't told any of the mares what had happened, except that Rose had tried to escape and the stallion - beaten to the point of death - was to be the "replacement." She didn't even know his name. Maisy's heart twinged with sympathy for the poor creature. At first she'd thought he wouldn't make it. But he had proved to be remarkably resilient. Now that he was pulling around, she was willing to risk visiting him. She heard a shuffling and a deep breath up ahead.
Maisy stopped in the shadows, twisting one ear back, "Hello?"
There was a sharp and aggravated snort, an she caught the gleam of angry eyes as they turned her way, "Isn't a bit late to be shoving your strength around, you ugly brute?" Bruised and beaten, the dark palomino looked with swollen eyes in her direction. At least his ill treatment hadn't quelled any of his fire. The fact was surprising - most horses wouldn't dare to challenge any of Flash's cronies, especially wounded and defenseless.
"I ain't Vincent, thanks", she replied.
There was a pause.
Maisy took a step into the light, so he could see she wasn't a threat, "Name's Maisy. How'r ye feelin'?"
His look of surprise didn't last long. "I've been better", he sighed. His ears, which had been pinned back, drooped sadly, "What do you want, Maisy?"
She lifted her head and lifted a hoof, "I'm sorry, but I don't know yer name."
"... Champs."
The name had a nice ring to it. "Is Rose alright?"
He turned to face her suspiciously, "Who's asking?"
"I am", Maisy answered with an indignant snort, "She's my friend. I want te know she's alright."
Champs still looked suspicious, but answered, "She's fine. Darko sent us out to find the horse that followed 'er. We found 'em all right. All five of 'em."
Relief flooded Maisy, so Rose was alright. But it had come at the cost of Champ's freedom. "I'm sorry", Maisy offered.
Champs narrowed his eyes, "Why do you stay?"
"Believe me, I don't want to."
"What's keeping you here then?"
"Same thugs that'r keepin' you."
"They won't keep me for long. As soon as I can, I'm outta here.", Champs claimed bravely. Maisy felt a twinge of guilt, even though she knew it wasn't her fault he was captured. Maisy felt the urge to do something. But he was still so weak, there didn't seem to be any hope of him escaping. Not alone. Besides, there were guards posted all over the hills, he couldn't possibly get past them all. Not alone. But maybe she could help him.
A loud shuffling in the bushes made both of their heads turn, Maisy caught the unmistakable scent of Vincent as he moved his extensive girth through the underbrush. She knew she would have to hurry to avoid being seen.
Champs seemed to understand. "You better get out of here."
Maisy turned back to him, "Listen, it's crazy tryin' to escape without 'elp. Don't do anything until I come back. Maybe I can help ye get out."
Champs ears swiveled back, "Be careful, Maisy."
She smiled, "Don't worry about me." And then she cantered, quickly and silently, out of sight.
