Yeah I use cell shading!
- doing lighting studies really helps!
- cell shading can get very simple (things like under the head, under the arms) or complicated (hair) so experiment and see which one works best for you~
- an easy way to think of how light works is to imagine a 3x3x3 box and placing the object in the middle of the box
- avoid black
- sometimes I do use a mix of softer shading (looks airbrushed) + cell shading. I generally use the softer shading on bigger areas to add depth/form
