I use photoshop elements, so I'm not sure if the windows are the same, but I go to the Layout tab and go all the way to adjustment layer, then photo filter, and I make sure its the first layer at the top. Then your able to change the different photo filters and mess with the opacity, etc. I just discovered it a few weeks ago and it helps so much with lighting.

I use a hard brush, set at either 2px or 3px, I leave the opacity at 100%. For dark horses I start with a black and make a tail, and the slowly use browns and light browns to form it into a tail.

what size brush do you use to paint your manes and tails? And what opacity is it set on?
