Supplementary material for “The Battle of Five Armies” indicates that the necklace of white gems Thranduil is so very interested in possessing was, in fact, once owned by (and originally made for) his late wife.
Well, that knocked around inside my brain for a while, and this was the result. Sorry if the necklace is off-model!

It gives a more "human" aspect to Thranduil if that were to be known. I think any husband would treasure his late wife's (or lover's) jewelry; it's one of the last reminders of that person. What a great drawing to represent it as well.
