I guess Toothless would be a wild stallion seeing as how Hiccup could bond with him.

Toothless should be a Friesian. They're relitivaly rare, and they're always black. They also come from the Netherlands, so it could be a little viking reference.

Well, not always. The breed standard calls for black, but greys and dark bays exist.

Nice! So Hiccup is an English rider. (I ride Icelandic and Western)
I wonder how these two met- was Toothless a wild horse who got hurt and Hiccup nursed him back to health in secret?

LOL, I only ride English. The stirrups for the Western saddles were always too long for me as a kid, no matter how much they shortened them XP In my head, Stoick and Hiccup bought Toothless at a horse fair. He was so expensive because he's a "superior" breed (y'know, like the fastest, best jumper, etc...), but he keeps getting sold because of his bad behavior (he's more of a smartass than having trust issues and stuff, so he's bad when he wants to be XD). Toothless gives them a hard time at first, but he warms up to Hiccup and becomes a good horsie X3 I like your idea, too, which sticks closer to the movie with the forbidden frienship and helping each other out concepts. There's always room for more than one version
I've never heard of riding Icelandic, what's it like?

That's just me. I always see Toothless as a wild creature.
Icelandic style of riding is just for Icelandic horses because of their unique body shape. The saddle looks English but has raised sides in front that help keep your legs held in place. It sits further back on the horse to help with their unique racking gait. There is also a tail strap that keeps the saddle from shifting forward. You ride with long legs, like with a Western saddle, and you don't post because the Icelandics have soft gaits. The bridle is like English but there also is a noseband since their necks are very powerful.
It looks quite similar to what Hiccup used as a saddle on Toothless, but not as flat.
Icelandic horses are weird in shape since they have heavy necks and shoulders and hindquarters and short legs. They are considered poinies but are build like horses- not little guys at all.
I like to think Night Furies are built a lot like Icelandics- small and with short heavy necks, shoulders, hindquarters. Yet they move very fast and are agile and surefooted.
