You can! Just do a bunch of thumbnail designs and keep the ones you like til you are at the "one" that you like most.

I've been doing a bunch most of which I haven't put up on dA yet. I've been studing other OC designs.

Researching is great to gather inspiration. Don't worry about posting to dA too much. You should have a lot of drawings that are just for you to see and decide what you like. Don't worry about a finished drawing when you are sketching out ideas too. People will get hooked up on drawing something they can't get right and they will stop drawing because they are frustrated. Just keep on designing, if you don't like it then move to your next sketch. Try not to erase, just draw draw draw and you will eventually come up with some designs you really really like, then you can redraw them until you are at your final draft of the design.

I just put on music that I like and go to town sketching.

Sometimes I get to hung up on faving stuff that I forget I'm using them to help me draw XD I've definately improved since joining dA. The drawings here help for me to see something then draw from it, rather than draw it from my head. I do a lot of ruff sketches rather than have it extremely perfect. Occationally a few will have half finished faces or no head at all if I'm speed sketching for outfit ideas. I never really have a final drawing really. I stick mainly to rough sketches. ^^

Glad to hear it! I do a bunch of sketches before I do a final piece that I'm ready to color in detail. It sucks when you spend a lot of time coloring a picture and the drawing isn't your best.
