I always did like to think there was a general combined universe featuring all the mon-based series of the '90s/'00s (Pokemon, Digimon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Beyblade, Fighting Foodons, etc.), and given the tenure and seniority of Pokemon in this instance, it would make a lot of sense that Ash and co. would be the ones in charge of defending it.

Plus, both Ash and Yugi managed to (sort of) do battle with Cell, of all people, and live to tell about it, so that's got some serious clout!
