As I have mentioned in various other OC descriptions, Darkeno and his organization, the Black Wave, have the means and intent to invade and observe other worlds in the universe. The world of Pokemon, in particular, had caught Darkeno's eye for being full of powerful, dangerous creatures which he could build a mighty army. Of the many species on the world, one of particular interest was a Pokemon capable of trapping people in eternal nightmares...

Despite Darkeno's usual cruel, cold-hearted demeanor towards anything with a pulse (and he's not all that fond of anything without one, either), Darkrai is one of the few beings he treats with respect, mostly because both of them have a deep connection with the power of dark energy. It is through this connection that Darkeno is able to Mega Evolve his partner through the conduit of his Mega Knuckle, making this combination a true threat to be feared in both dreams and reality.
