I’ve been working on this study since the end of last year. I often paint people who are in the middle of standing awkwardly. In an attempt to clear this up I did a study of Rowena from AdorkaStock falling while shooting to try and learn how bodies work with more interesting posing.

I wanted to capture that sense of action and movement, and the model was doing a sweet falling while shooting shot that contrasted the normal standing shots I’d learned from before. In the reference she had a revolver for more of a badass action scene, but I’m not a fan of guns so I swapped it to a squirtgun.

It’s worth learning from all sources and I feel part of wisdom is being conscious about how to bring in all but have a good processing system so that learning is intentional. So many systems that are vital to learning and functionality are built with violence, and hierarchical oppression built into them and lots of things can be invisible when just focusing on the intended content to learn.

How do you filter and process content to learn what helps you grow in ways that are meaningful to you without replicating damaging habits and assumptions built into the systems you’re learning from? When you notice patterns in lots of the sources you learn from, how do you respond?
