I can actually see him doing this, and I can see Steven attempting to try and convince Lion to come back, but then Connie tells him that maybe this is what's best for Lion...because in the end, he's still a wild animal and wild animals will always follow their instincts, and she tells Steven that if he really does care about Lion, he'll let him go.
Of course, it doesn't mean that they can't visit him every now and then. Who knows? There might be little pink lion cubs in the future!
