Chapter 34

Ville stood outside the door to his hotel room alone. He knew Danni was inside, he could hear her moving. He breathed in deeply several times trying to psych himself up to end things. He knew now that it was what he should do, and he knew that he didn’t love her anymore. Deep down he knew that he was right about her cheating on him as well, he didn’t know how he knew, just something in his heart told him he was right, or maybe it was all the times Bam and Cassie had told him not to trust her. He could feel adrenaline coursing through his body; apparently he was excited to be breaking up with Danni. He felt a smile spread across his lips as he thought that once he and Danni were over all he had to do was wait until morning, then go to Cassie. He knew that he owed Bam this one last night with Cassie, and he knew why Bam wanted it, but he could live with that, after all Cassie was technically Bam’s girlfriend right now.

Finally he felt ready. He reached his hand out and turned the knob on the door. He hesitated ever so slightly before pushing it open. He was greeted by Danni pacing the room, a large glass of Vodka clutched in her shaking hands, clothed only in a white silk bath robe. He wondered if she knew already what was coming, had Bam told her?
“Hello gorgeous” She said, noticing Ville had entered the room. She walked over to him and moved her body in close to his, wrapping her arms around his neck. Ville could smell the alcohol on her breath, and wondered just how much she had had that night. He placed his hands on her wrists and removed her arms from around his neck, letting them fall to her sides.
“We have to talk” He said simply, dodging around her and making his way to the sofa in the corner of the room.
“I can think of something much better to do than talk” She said, a seductive smile on her lips, as she untied the cord at her waist. Ville watched as the white silk fluttered like snow to the ground landing in a crumpled mess about Danni’s feet. She softly ran a finger down her torso, her eyes locked onto Ville’s.
“Would you not rather have me, than talk?” She purred, getting to her knees between Ville’s legs and reaching her hand towards his crotch.
“Stop it Danni, put your clothes back on.” He said, getting to his feet.
“Why? What’s wrong baby?” She said. Her façade was beginning to falter now as her smile disappeared for a moment from her lips. She stood to, again reaching her hand towards Ville, attempting to remove his jeans.
“I said stop it Danni. We have to talk. Now put your clothes back on and listen to me” He said, just a hint of annoyance tainted his words.

Danni’s fake smile disappeared now. She stooped to the ground and wrapped her robe about her again. She took a seat on the edge of the bed as Ville sat down again on the sofa.
“That bastard told you, didn’t he?” Danni said a nasty look on her face.
“What do you think Bam told me?” He asked, knowing instinctively that Bam would be the bastard she was referring to.
“You know fine what I mean. He told you about Marco” Danni said, venom now dripping from every word.
“Who’s Marco?” Ville asked. He knew that something had happened tonight that he was unaware of, but if he admitted that then he would be at a disadvantage. His best bet, as he figured it, was to play along, as if he knew exactly what she was talking about but just wanted to torture her. Danni was thinking at the same time why was he torturing her when he obviously knew what was happening? She figured he just wanted to her it from her own lips. That was alright, she could win him round, and surely he wouldn’t call off their engagement over something like an affair? At least she hoped he wouldn’t.

Danni was silent for a long time, Ville never once removing his green eyes from her face.
“I’ll ask again, who is Marco?” He said, slowly and calmly. She looked him in the eyes now, her brown eyes shivering with panic. She was caught; she would have to own up. Again she hoped that he wouldn’t dump her over Marco. She took a deep breath, attempting to steady her nerves.
“He’s my lover. Your little bitch caught us tonight, hence the bruise” Danni spat. It was only then that Ville even noticed the growing bruise about her left eye. He felt himself laugh in his head as he imagined Cassie smacking Danni.
“To be honest love, I don’t care.” Ville said. He watched as Danni’s face broke into a grin; obviously she thought he was willing to forgive her infidelities, when really he didn’t care because he was about to end their relationship before he even knew this other man existed.
“Oh Ville! I’m so…” Ville cut her off, raising one hand to hush her.
“No, you misunderstand. I don’t care because I don’t love you anymore. You just made what I came here to say anyway a whole lot easier.” Ville said. He didn’t mean to seem cold but he couldn’t help it. All love he had for her was gone before he arrived, and now her cheating and attempts to seduce him to cover her tracks had caused him to lose any lingering respect he still held for her. He watched as her face crumbled and she covered it with shaking hands.

Again she was silent for a long time. She just sat there, her face covered. He knew she wasn’t crying, she wasn’t making any sounds at all, her hands were shaking but she wasn’t making any sounds.
“How could you do this to me?” She said, finally moving her hands away.
“How could I do this to you? Danni, you were cheating on me!” Ville said. He could feel himself starting to get angry. He was starting to notice now the way that she would normally have manipulated him into believing what she was saying.
“You didn’t know that when you decided though, did you? Why, all of a sudden, don’t you love me any more? You loved me this morning” she said. He could tell from her voice that she was angry, not upset, or heartbroken.
“Danni, I haven’t loved you for a long time. I just realised today is all. You don’t love me either; you would be lying if you said did. You wouldn’t cheat if you did.” Ville said. He really didn’t care what she said next. There was nothing that could change his mind.
“I did love you, once upon a time Ville. I’m not entirely cold hearted” She said, her voice significantly softer than before. She looked into his eyes now and she could see there was nothing there for her anymore. At least she still had Marco, he was poor but she had her modelling and she made enough to get by on. She wondered for a second what could possibly have happened since she last saw him to make him realise that he didn’t care for her anymore.
“Is this to do with Cassie?” She said her words harsh again. “Are you leaving me for her?”
“I love her Danni. I have always loved her. I’m sorry, really I am. I should have ended things with us the first time you asked me about Cassie.” He said. He didn’t really know why he apologised; it just seemed like the right thing to do.
“That’s the day I stopped loving you.” She said simply.
“I know” Ville said. He didn’t feel that there was anything else left to be said. There was no going back now. He had to tell Cassie. She would say yes, he just knew she would.

Ville watched as Danni rose from the bed. She grabbed clothes and silently disappeared into the bathroom. Ville heard the door lock behind her. He stood now from his chair and grabbed his suit case. He began to pack his clothes intending to go to reception and bet another room. At the same time Danni sat on the edge of the bath. She cried now that she was alone. She wasn’t sad to lose Ville, but all the things Bam had said were true. She did love Ville’s money; she loved his connections and how many more jobs she had been offered since they were together. She was actually going to have to work hard now. She dried her tears and dressed quickly. She could hear Ville moving around outside. She hurriedly reapplied her make-up and after taking a deep breath she unlocked the door and walked back out into the bedroom. She watched for a few seconds as Ville packed his clothes up.
“Don’t bother. I’ll leave. I’ll go to Marco’s room” She said, immediately beginning to gather her things and put them in the other suitcase. She was done quicker than she realised as she threw the last shoe into her case.
“Give me the numbers for all the wedding stuff. I’ll cancel it.” She said, grabbing the note pad and pen from the bedside table and handing it to Ville. She watched as he scribbled down several numbers and handed the paper back.
“Well, I’d love to say I’ll miss you, but I won’t. You were such a gullible idiot. All this time I’ve been fucking Marco and you didn’t have a clue. He was there the night you proposed to me you know? As soon as you left I went back to bed with him. We laughed about how stupid you were” Danni said viciously. For some reason she wanted to hurt Ville. Maybe that little flicker of love she had felt so long ago was more than she thought.
“I don’t care Danni.” Was all Ville said. And he didn’t care. He didn’t love her anymore anyway so her attempts to hurt him were rather pointless. He was a bigger person than to try to do the same to her though; he was content just to let her leave.
“You’ll never get her. Cassie, I mean. She loves that idiot friend of yours. You’ve messed her around too much Ville. She’ll never choose you.” Danni said as she made her way over to the door.
“Just fuck off please” He said, not looking at her anymore. Truth be told, she had voiced his worst fear but he wasn’t going to let her know that. He watched as the smile that had been on her lips faded again. Obviously she hadn’t expected him to speak to her like that. She just let out an angry little huff, turned on her heel and left the room.
‘Finally it’s over.’ Ville thought, as a huge grin split his face from ear to ear.
