Description

Yep just a test. Really wasn't going to upload it but I figure if I ever get better with Eevee, one day, i'll have something to look back on and compare.

I will say before all else, the best thing about Eevee so far is how fast it renders compared to cycles! That was definitely something that made me curious about it in the first place. From there, I'm really interested to see what the full version has in store to come!

Anyway, I was inspired to give Blender 2.8's Eevee a try (again) after watching a stream by Sreliata . ^^

I tried to figure it out before and failed miserably from having no clue how it works, it was really great to have something to go by for examples and even learn a couple of things i could do with future cycles works! With 2.8, it's like learning all over again and we're all noobs at some point so everybody has to start somewhere! There's way too many issues I ran into to list here sadly. Mostly just trying to figure out which node set ups do and dont work, and using substitutes in their place, etc. I think I'm probably most happy with is the metal looking parts. That was about the best i could pull off. Which is better than nothing!

But like with all tests there's trial and error and the only thing that saved this thing was photoshop. So if it looks good in any capacity, that's why. I just couldnt leave the raw blender image as it was so I did my best to clean it up. The background is just a quick throw together as well and though I did try to get some shadows in, i had to make some myself.

Since I was doing KH3 pose related pictures anyway, I decided using Terra as the next one and as a subject would work. I might remake it in cycles down the line, but for now, this will have to do. His pose in the KH3 Ultimania wasn't too bad to copy either. Save for posing the hands -__-. Fingers why do you not bend the way I want you too in blender! lol

As always when it comes to learning new things like this, I welcome any tips, suggestions, tricks, etc.

And if you like it, yay. If not, well there's always the next one..... down the line when it comes to Eevee. Practice practice!

I'll be holding onto using cycles for a while longer though!

I thought this was cycles!! Oh my god, that lighting.
These materials. The pose. All of it!

I am especially intriguied by the lighting. In eevee, you have to do all of that yourself.Β
Did you use many there?

Gosh, this image looks amazing!! I have no words- and I can't wait for more!!

Oh gosh no no no! I WISH it was cycles. Eevee definitely lacks where cycles has the benefits lol

The materials are all on the principled shader too (there's an add on that helps utilize this shader, although when adding a texture, im not sure how lol)! And I was able to adjust the materials all in one go thanks to your stream! Although the skin came out bad (think i screwed up the SS because the lips and eyebrows were red and his details disappeared! or maybe i added too much SS?) so i totally had to do some PS work on it. x_x I also have no idea how to remove doubles so i wasnt sure if i could use the subdivide option or not, so i left it out THe final result in the render was really hmm.... flat looking i guess?

BUT i did try to copy some of what cycles could do with the lighting! Since we cant use what cycles has grrr, I had to go back to basics so to speak but still keep the idea of how cycles works in mind.

We know most scenes are best viewed with 3 point lights right? So what I did was I added a background to the world-node set up to give it that global light all around. Then added 3 'area' lights to the sides and behind him then resized them a little. Two on each side were square set, while the one behind was 'eclipse'/ well a circle. And just changed the strength of each light! Sucks that Eevee wont let you use node sets up for lights, ugh. I couldnt get the floor beneath him to disappear in render so i took it out all together.

The shadows of the lights sadly aren't as strong like they are with cycles (WTF right? lol) so i couldnt get that down perfect. What I did instead was mess with the shadows, highlights, and contrast of the image in photoshop by isolating the specific spots that needed to stand out (color range) then overall adjusting the colors/levels again to make it 'pop' and added a slight rim lighting to enhance the light behind him.

I hope this helps! If not, you know how to reach me! ^^

im seriously just glad you like it omg.

Yeah, the shadows in eevee really lack.. finesse, so to speak!
The ambient occlusion does helpΒ  but it's a hit or miss. Either too bright or too dark ha'ha.

We'll see how the thing will be with the full release. Beta is already kinda nice!!

And oh god yes I LOVE it! So much. Thank you also for those lighting tipps.
You really are better at that than I am.

I found a tutorial on how to do a makeshift shadow catcher with nodes but that too is hit or miss and depends on the lights. Funnily enough when i played with the shadow settings, namely the 'distance' part and 'contact shadows', if you pan the camera around the model you can see the shadows in full from the different angle. Its weird!

Beta is nice. I do like the instant rendering thing. took about 2 minutes for mine to render ooomg XD I never even knew about the ambient occlusion thing either. In fact, I never knew / know how to add anything other than bump maps and mini bumps. In the old node sets up they'd usually come with the node for adding those in but learning how to add all that by itself? I really have no clue! lol

Hey im just happy to offer some help for a change you know? ^_^ really. I just looked a sample light set up in 2.7 (im sure you know which one ^_~) and checked the right panel to see what kind ofΒ  lamp was used then just tried to replicate the 'base' concept of it, since like I said, you cant duplicate that set up to a T but if you can replicate the initial lights, it does an ok job for a basic set up

I had a big issue with the hair sadly though the edges have this weird color around them and arent totally transparent so when it comes to hair (and skin!) you're WAY better at that than me!

Problems with the hair? You rendered this with a transparent background, right?
Sadly, with eevee, there is no way around that. I will have those issues with hair too!

Make sure to have it set to alpha hashed though. Do you do that?

Yep transparent background. Alpha hashed. Even added a transparency node to the set up too. Unless that right there was the issue lol. Alternatively, I also tried the hair node set up i use in 2.7 and of course, that didn't work at all. So i went back to the basic set up and still got the issue. Hopefully the full release of Eevee will have those kind of issues fixed! -fingers crossed-
