Working at the Superstar Daycare Ch 5Chapter 5: Facing Fears Giddily I jumped out of my seat and squealed silently before leaving the theater. The excitement had finally gotten to me. My mouth was wide and my hands shook about. I shut my eyes and just let myself be excited for a moment before moving forward. I didn't want to look like a weirdo in front of everyone. Mia would be done with her shift soon. I didn't want to be the reason we missed anything today. So I made sure to be by the door before 12. I would much rather be the one waiting than be late. I picked a table where the play area was in view. I resisted the urge to just watch them in there. It wasn't polite to stare after all. Periodically I would look somewhere else. The palm tree shaped lights, the wooden doors, the print of Freddy's face on the table- Then it went dark. “Oh?” I looked around, “Did the power go out?” Almost everyone was gone. I had somehow missed the people leaving, despite how much my eyes were exploring around. This reminded me of a horror game set in an art museum. Where the people suddenly vanished when it got dark and another world was discovered. That was a fun one. I didn't leave my seat, though. It was probably just a fuse that had blown. I just kept my eyes on the door. To see when Mia would leave. It was awfully quiet. I didn't hear any children at all. Which was odd to me. I expected to hear them react to the lights going out. Curiosity eventually convinced me to look into the play area again. I couldn't see anyone in there either. Now that was especially strange. Was there a lockdown going on? Did I manage to miss an alarm going off? It wouldn't be the first time. Some movement caught my attention. It was somewhere up in the climbing area. I squinted and attempted to focus on it. The glowing stars made it hard to see much up there... Wait-- There! There it was! A set of glowing stars on their own. Not a part of the ceiling, but of something else. It was the outfit of a figure, slumped over, looking down. The pieces hanging off the bars swung back and forth melancholically. Was that a person up there? It was hard to tell. I continued to analyze it. The silhouette turned to me- “Oh hey! Nae-nae! Sorry, I'm late,” The voice made me jump, “You ready to head out of here? I know I am!” Being pulled out of such deep concentration left me in shock. It took me a moment to actually hear what was said. Miss Mia was standing next to me. Smiling and as excited as ever. Maybe even more so. “Uh... yeah... Yeah!” My voice regained confidence slowly. This was going to be fun. I repeated that to myself enough to hopefully be convinced by now. I've wanted to go to a place like this since I was little. But we never had the money to do so. I returned Mia's smile. I slung the strap of my bag over my shoulder, “I hope that the power outage is over soon,” I looked up at the ceiling. The stars up there really were beautiful. It made it feel less intimidating. “Power outage?” Mia giggled, “Oh no, it's just nap time. They turn the lights off in here every day for naps. To encourage people to be quiet.” Her voice was quieter than it was earlier this morning. Yet another thing I had failed to notice. “Th-that's good,” I felt a bit embarrassed, “I was worried that everything was off.” “Yeah, there's usually an announcement before so people know,” Mia's eyes wandered off for a moment before returning to me. Her voice was even more hushed now. “Let's get going before Mr. Moon gets grumpy at us.”, “Hmm?” was all I managed to say before Mia rushed off up the stairs. I tried to get one last look at the play area before leaving. But it was too short for me to see anything. I quickened my pace to catch up. I would have to learn more about that later. Mia was waving to me from the other side of the check-in area. Safe in the light by the fountain while I was still in the shadows. I wasn't too fussed about walking in the dark, but I quickened my pace anyway. Didn't want to make her wait. The two statues seemed so much bigger in the dark. I looked up at where I remembered the moon one being as I walked passed. This might be the closest I get to meeting him today. It appeared... Ominous. Some glints of light reflected off of its face, giving its smile a sinister tone. My observations came to an end once I reached the light. I closed my mouth. I hoped that it wasn't open that entire time. If it was Mia didn't seem to notice or care. She was too busy sighing in relief. “Ho, boy,” she put a hand at her chest, “Moon was this close to chasing us off I swear!” With her other hand, she showed a tiny gap between her thumb and index finger. “He was?” My eyes darted around the fountain area. It was much more populated now. Before the nerves could get to me I focused on Mia again. “I didn't notice.” “Oh yeah! He was right at the window. With those scary glowing eyes,” She paused a moment to shudder dramatically, “I usually get off before the lights go out, but I had to help with a couple of things today. Boy, am I glad I don't have to deal with that every day.” “Heh heh...” I managed to smile, “yeah. I bet.” “Not to make you worry or anything,” Mia's smile was apologetic, “It's not all that bad really. I'm just a wimp when it comes to creepy stuff. Don't wanna scare you off or anything!” “It's okay,” I shake away a wave of goosebumps, “I'm not easily scared.” “Well, that's good!” Mia quickly recovered the conversation, “But hey, let's go have some fun! I'm not gonna let that ticket go to waste! No sir!” She jumped off of her spot on the fountain wall. Her motions were exaggerated and energetic. “Come on, I'll show you around~” I follow my excitable companion out of the fountain area and into an even more crowded place. I hunch a moment before correcting myself. Keep cool. I'm good. Instead, I preoccupy my mind with observing my surroundings. This must have been the main room because it was massive. I had never seen ceilings so high before. There were glowing stars on every tile above us. It only made this room feel even bigger. It was a wonder to behold. “So,” Mia's voice interrupted my thoughts again, “We could go to the Superstarcade first or get something at El Chip's.” For both suggestions, she pointed somewhere above us, “What sounds good to you?” Admittedly getting something to eat sounded good. As I had not eaten since well before my interview this morning. I wasn't comfortable saying it. Eating in front of her just sounded embarrassing. I looked around one more time. It looked like there was one floor above us and one below. There were more palm tree lights everywhere. Both keeping it well lit and giving the appearance of having greenery. However, the smell of cheesy carpet and oil defeated that illusion. I had to give my answer eventually, “The arcade sounds good.” There had to be some food vendors on the way, I hoped. “I would like to see what games they have.” I glance back at Mia who seemed a bit disappointed. Oh crap! I didn't think that she might be hungry, too. She just got off work after all. “But- uh...” I try to spin it in the most 'I'm not a fickle person' way I could, “we could maybe find something to snack on while heading that way. uh... If you want that is...” Mia's eyes glanced from side to side for a moment, “Oh! Yeah! Actually, that'll be excellent~ The churros stand will be open today. That's way better than what I was thinking! My mouth is watering just thinking about it! Come on let's go!” She rushed off to the escalators. I followed behind trying my best not to hit anyone with my bag in our hurry. Thankfully the escalators were turned on now. I heaved a silent sigh. Mia was a few steps above me but she waited at the top for me. I felt my mouth fall and my eyes widen when I saw the line. The tiny food stand was near the entrance to the Superstarcade, but you would have to go to the entrance of the Fazcade on the other side of the room to get in line. “Oh, dear...” My face continued its astonishment routine. Those must be really good churros. I was about to apologize to Mia and suggest we do something else, but she just went to the front of the line. “Wait, what are you doing?!” Mia chuckled mischievously, “Let me show you what that ticket can do. Here hand it over~” I fumble through the pocket of my bag and present her with the ticket. She confidently pranced up to the robot manning the stand. I resisted the urge to run away. “Please wait in line-” the bot didn't even finish before Mia waved the golden slip at it, “BIG WINNER! BIG WINNER!” Some confetti popped out from behind the robot, “Congratulations lottery winner! What would you like today?” “Two jumbo churros, please!” Mia's smile almost touched her ears. The bot wasted no time handing her the order and waving her goodbye. Her feet shimmied and danced their way over to me. “I've wanted to do that for such a long time~!!” She handed me one of the churros and almost exploded in excitement. She giggled to herself at first then burst out in a laughing fit. The people left in line looked in our direction. They murmured and pointed at us. I felt my face tense up. I couldn't hear what they were saying, but I was not comfortable with their eyes on me. I tried to turn away, to ignore them. It wasn't that big of a deal, I tried to tell myself. But in the back of my head, I could still see them. Those judgmental glares... Some of them even looked upset. Truly upset. At me. No, no... Stop looking at me, please... Why was our destination behind them?! Oh no... I turned and walked in the opposite direction. I had to get out of there. The corners of my lips quivered and my vision got cloudy. I heard Mia say something behind me, but my ears just weren't willing to hear it. I looked for a seat that was as hidden. Or as much as one could be with all the glass and open walls. I sat down as quietly as I could and just-- stared. At nothing in particular. Just looking down and in front of me. My breathing was becoming shallow. Gosh dang it! Don't cry... Don't cry! This was supposed to be fun. Don't ruin it! Those 'please just calm down' thoughts continued to no avail. I was very close to just bawling my eyes out. The wrapping around my food was permanently dented. Just the thought of eating was sickening right then. “Hey...” a hand touched my shoulder. I jumped. “Are you doing okay? Is something bothering you?” Mia's voice was calm and quiet. She sounded genuinely concerned. This only made me feel more embarrassed. I ruined it! I ruined it! No... “S-sorry,” I try to save this situation, “It's just-” I breathe slowly, “I'm not used to big crowds... Looking at me.” A couple more breaths, “I just need a break for a bit...” I fiddle with the edges of the churros wrapper. It felt thin and oily. “Oh, okay, we can eat here first then,” I heard Mia shuffle into the seat in front of me. Only nibbling on my food once I heard Mia doing so. I remained quiet. Trying to tune everything out. To hear nothing just for a few moments. That would be a blessing. This went on for a few minutes. Slowly eating while steadily calming down. After finishing her food Mia spoke, “You know... it's okay to feel overwhelmed. I know I was when I first started,” I was ready to look at Mia now. She didn't look upset, she didn't look concerned. Her face was compassionate, understanding. She continued, “And I'm sorry if I scared you with all that Moon stuff. I have this bad habit of just... saying stuff. Whatever comes to mind. I didn't think about how bad it would sound to you.” Mia waved her empty food wrapper with a small smile, “You remind me so much of my older sister... She's...” Her eyes wandered above her, looking for the right word. “Anxious,” I provide. “Well, I wanted a nicer way to say it, but yeah,” Mia's smile slanted and her eyes squinted, “And now I'm thinking maybe inviting myself to hang out was too much for you today. If you aren't up for it I would totally understand. You can be honest with me.” “No, no!” I straighten up, “I still wanna hang out. I-I've been hyping myself up for it all morning. I want to hang out,” I nod my head and try to make my intention clear, “I really mean it.” Mia's face still didn't seem convinced. I elaborated, “It was just... Those people in line staring at us after you used the ticket. They looked mad... I was overwhelmed, I guess.” “Well, I say, let them be jealous!” Mia's contagious laugh made the corners of my lips curl up, “It's not every day you get to see the 'All-in-One' pass in action. And I think it couldn't have gone to a more worthy person~ And if anyone has anything bad to say about you I'll make sure they regret it!” Mia flashed a few muscle poses. Her physique made them look less impressive, but she was trying to cheer me up. I appreciated the sentiment. “I guess so,” I chuckled, “But you might have to push me past that line to get to the games. Just to warn you.” Mia's determined face looked ready for the challenge. “Oh you betcha!” My brain was officially out of 'oh gosh oh no' mode. I heft myself out of my chair and threw away our trash in a nearby bin. “Sorry about that,” I start but Mia waved that conversation away. “Oh don't be~ You're fine,” she smiled wide at me, “Now let's get to the fun!” She led me to the arcade. Acting big and tough looking. Despite how small she was, the thought that she was looking out for me made me feel safer. It was time to have some fun at Freddy's!...
