what I learned to do is decrease the contrast and increase the brightness thus taking a very pale scan. then adjust the levels in photoshop.

The fact you photoshopped the eyes is really good - it makes them stand out. Like the only living things among the deadness of the rest of his face. (yeah, I'm poetic).
