Description Name:
Dual-Finned Whale

Anatomy:
Dual-finned whales are quite large, but the most noticeable feature, and also the one they're named after, is that they have two pairs of front fins. These large whales have a major underbite and have many small, sharp teeth. These whales breathe air and tend to dive deep, so their bodies naturally support blowholes and large lungs. Two dorsal fins sprout from their back, with males having larger and/or taller dorsal fins than females. They also have very faint markings that glow softly (bioluminescent) during the night and appear to be used for silent communication. It’s reported that dual-finned whales who dive deeper have brighter markings.

Size:
Adult dual-finned whales typically range from 18m (59ft) to 26m (85ft), though can grow to 30m (98ft) in the right conditions. This size is very rare, however.

Diet:
Dual-finned whales mainly eat large fish and other sea creatures. That being said, they're carnivores and cannot live on plants in dire times like other aquatic mammals. These whales also tend to attack and/or eat creatures who are aggressive towards them or their calves, including but not limited to, beblune, humans, and wave threshers.

Geographical location:
Usually deep in Troza's Rift. They're not as common in the surrounding oceans, and it is unclear as to why.

Habitat:
As stated before, they prefer to dive deep into Troza's Rift and prey on larger fish and sea creatures. Those who dive deeper tend to grow larger and stronger but are more at risk of being attacked, while the whales who stay in the shallows are smaller and a bit weaker, but safer.

Predators:
Wave threshers, humans, beblune and larger ocean critters tend to be the most common predators. Wave threshers mainly target young calves, humans need to be in larger groups to hunt them, and many aquatic beblune hunt the adolescent whales.

Behaviour:
Dual-finned whales are mainly passive and travel in pods of 8-12 whales. If you mean no harm, they don't either. Typically, they don't attack beblune or humans unless they show signs of aggression, but humans are often mistaken for fish and are more at risk of getting eating than beblune. They'll come up to breathe every once in a while and will dive back down to the ocean depths.
Regarding mating and pods, there will always be an "alpha" of a pod. They're usually male, but can also be female. They protect the pod and, along with the other adult whales, take care of the calves. These whales usually mate for life, so two dual-finned whales will always be together (unless one dies). Even then, the widowed whale is unlikely to pick a new mate. Their gestation period is roughly 8-12 months, and the entire pod migrates to the shallows (if they're not already in the shallows) to birth the calves (even if only one calf is due).
If a pod gets too big, they often split in half. There have been reports of pods of 20-30, however, it'd be unlikely to see them, as they probably roam the deepest parts of Troza's Trench and are undoubtedly aggressive.
