Hmmm the clothings texture make me kinda suspicious. Did you entirely, 100% paint that? Or just overcoloured the b/w original?

It's all painted on solid colors using layer masks. When I stack the layers it creates an illusion of texture. That's how I create shadows and highlights. I don't want to reveal my secret technique because then people will start copying me but I will tell you I do use the original image as a source. However, it is 100% invisible after all my solid colors are finished. For example, if you look at this digital painting breakdown I made of a different portrait here: [link] you can see what I mean by stacking solid colors with layer masks. It is a long process but it's more editable that way and with the right brushes and patience you can get realistic looking portraits, trust me I've been learning this in college level photoshop classes for years.
