I absolutely love painting black & white pictures in color!This is an image from the new Vanity Fair photo shoot featuring Liam Hemsworth, Jennifer Lawrence, and Josh Hutcherson.

Hmmm the clothings texture make me kinda suspicious. Did you entirely, 100% paint that? Or just overcoloured the b/w original?

It's all painted on solid colors using layer masks. When I stack the layers it creates an illusion of texture. That's how I create shadows and highlights. I don't want to reveal my secret technique because then people will start copying me but I will tell you I do use the original image as a source. However, it is 100% invisible after all my solid colors are finished. For example, if you look at this digital painting breakdown I made of a different portrait here: [link] you can see what I mean by stacking solid colors with layer masks. It is a long process but it's more editable that way and with the right brushes and patience you can get realistic looking portraits, trust me I've been learning this in college level photoshop classes for years.

Haha yes, I have painted some things without using a reference but that was a long time ago and they don't look nearly as good as my realistic paintings. The closest you'll see of one of my original paintings on here is this one: [link] the only thing I really referenced for this portrait was Katniss's head and the outline of the base for the dress but all the colors and flames were hand drawn with special brushes using the same solid color layer technique I use for all my paintings

I'm not a professional, I'm a college student but I have worked at a college newspaper as a photographer and graphic designer and I have won various awards for student design art pieces at local county fairs

at first i was like "this is a nice photo. i love how it kinda has the painting-look to it." then..... i read the description and i was like "OMFG HOW DOES THIS PERSON DO THAT!?!?!?"
