Description
There are simply no words to express how grateful we all are (or should be) for first responders. This morning I covered a wreck a few miles south of our newsroom in the small, quiet town of Woodington, NC.
This wreck involved three vehicles, resulting in one death and two injuries. A compact car crossed the center line of a two-lane highway, hitting a dump truck head-on, killing the driver of the compact car instantly. The dump truck was pulling a bulldozer on a trailer, which promptly jackknifed on impact. This caused the third vehicle, a pickup truck, to be pinned underneath the dump truck. The driver of the pickup truck was trapped under the dump truck for two hours before they were able to cut the roof off of his truck and get him out. The two injured were airlifted to nearby hospitals.
This is only the second wreck I've covered as a photojournalist, my first "hard" news story and I've been working in news for about 8 months now.
Covering events like this really forces you to cherish and appreciate life while you can. Thank you to all first responders and those serving the public in this manner.
