Description

There are simply no words to express how grateful we all are (or should be) for first responders. This morning I covered a wreck a few miles south of our newsroom in the small, quiet town of Woodington, NC.

This wreck involved three vehicles, resulting in one death and two injuries. A compact car crossed the center line of a two-lane highway, hitting a dump truck head-on, killing the driver of the compact car instantly. The dump truck was pulling a bulldozer on a trailer, which promptly jackknifed on impact. This caused the third vehicle, a pickup truck, to be pinned underneath the dump truck. The driver of the pickup truck was trapped under the dump truck for two hours before they were able to cut the roof off of his truck and get him out. The two injured were airlifted to nearby hospitals.

This is only the second wreck I've covered as a photojournalist, my first "hard" news story and I've been working in news for about 8 months now.

Covering events like this really forces you to cherish and appreciate life while you can. Thank you to all first responders and those serving the public in this manner.

Thank you.  It's a difficult and vital job they -- and you -- do.  Saw it in tanikel 's journal.

They probably are. I know several volunteer firefighters from the area are in college, they have a junior firefighters program for those in High School as well.

It's awesome of them to decide on this job right out of school.

It would be great to have a job with a meaning like that. My work has no meaning and it is full of shit every day. I wish I find a way out of it before it's too late.

What do you do, and what do you want to do?

Well done, Sara! I agree. I spent 43 years doing this and you are right. It taught me what really mattered- family and friends. I call my Mom, my children and grand kids every day to say I love you. Thanks for this!!!

Thanks for all I did. I retired 3 yr ago. I had a full on view of reality for a long time. Couldn't have loved that life more, or the people. Thanks again.
