An autonomous region of Portugal composed of nine volcanic islands in the middle of the NOrth Atlantic Ocean.
In 1975, following a leftist Carnation Revolution in Portugal, it was a strong sentiment to declare independence of the
strategic islands led by the Front for the Liberation of Azores, a right-wing group.
After the things settled down in Portugal and Azores received an autonomous status, the issue of independence went dead.
