The Corn Islands (English name is officially used in Spanish-speaking Nicaragua) are
two islands about 70 km east off the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua, part of the Autonomous Region of South Atlantic.
A British protectorate of Mosquito Coast from 1655 until 1894, when it was claimed by Nicaragua.
Leased to the U.S. in 1914 until 1971.
English is the principal language of the Creole population, although it is being supplanted by Spanish and Miskito.
