Karenni (Kayah) State of Myanmar is located on the Thai-Myanmar border, with Shan State to the north, and to the
south Karen ( Kayin) State.
It is believed that the Karenni people migrated from Mongolia and settled in what is today Kayah State in 739BC.
Until 1948 Karenni State had never been under control of another country.
While other states in Burma were annexed to be part of India in 1885, the British recognized an 1875 agreement in which
they acknowledge the independence and sovereignty of Karenni Sate.
When Burma received independence in 1948, Karenni State decided to join the union of Burma, regretting it dearly
after Gen. Ne Win came to power.
Since then, several Karenni armed movement continue the fight to regain independence.
Most prominent among them is the Karenni National Progressive Party.
The Karenni language belongs to the Sino-Tibetan family and has its own script.
