Khalistan is the name of the wished-for separate Sikh state in Punjab.
It means "Land of the Pure".

Harking back to the 18th century Sikh Empire,
the envisioned Sikh state would include all Punjabi-speaking areas in Greater Punjab.

The movement reached its zenith in 1970s and 1980s, Nowadays, it is widely seen as a smaller scale movement.
In 1971, the Republic of Khalistan was proclaimed in exile and various militant Sikh groups engaged in the
terrorist-like actions against the Indian government.

After the partitioning of the British India,
Nehru promised the Sikhs a measure of autonomy in the Indian Union, which was never really delivered.

The Sikh leader felt they were tricked into joining India and ever since continue the struggle for the
independence of Khalistan, now mostly by peaceful political means.

The total number of Sikhs is estimated at 30 million, with 20 million in India alone.
