Quebec is a predominantly French-speaking province in east-central Canada.
Sovereignty plays a large role in the politics of Quebec, and the political parties represented in the parliament range
from autonomist to independist and everything in between.
Two referendums on secession held in 1980 and 1995 were voted down by a very narrow margin.
In 2006, the Canadian House of Commons passed a symbolic motion, recognizing the "Quebecois as a nation within united Canada".
