An island chain off the west coast of Scotland, part of the Hebrides.
Scottish Gaelic is the dominant language, although in some areas English speakers form a majority.
The Western Isles have their own council:
Comhairle nan Eilean Siar with elected councilors, most of them independents.
The islands participate in the Islands Games and have its own football (soccer) team.
