Yeah, I know it’s a little early, but if they can play Christmas commercials in November then I can draw Christmas art.

So, that time of year is once again approaching, and my mother knows that the great reindeer rants are about to begin anew. What do I mean by that? Well, the creators of Christmas movies, books, décor, and anything related to the holiday in general seem to think they don’t need to actually look at a picture of an animal before they attempt to sell its image to the public. So most of the reindeer portrayed in film and put on decorations look more like whitetail deer or elk. It is driving me up the wall. Like, I would understand if reindeer were really ugly, unappealing looking creatures, but they’re not. They’re absolutely gorgeous, and the calves (yes, calves, not fawns) are otherworldly levels of adorable. Also, they aren’t born with spots. Just saying. Oh, and both the males and females have antlers.

So I wanted to create my own version of the Rudolph story with more accurate reindeer designs to remedy the pain I feel on a yearly basis having to see the reindeer in animated Christmas specials. Since the name Rudolph means famous wolf, I wanted to give him a more gray-toned design to make him look a bit wolfish. In my story his mother is Dancer and his father is another reindeer not from the original story who was killed when the sled lost its way in a storm the night Rudolph was born. The bell Rudolph wears is from his father’s harness. Don’t expect to see a lot of this story, since I have other things I’d rather work on, but I wanted to at least have a crack at designing the character. I think he’s rather adorable, if I do say so myself. Also, I hate drawing hooves with the fiery passion of a thousand suns.
