Chapter 1 : Life at Shadowclan

Leafbare came and Shadow turned six moons old. She and Snowflake joined Shadowclan and Shadow got her apprentice name, Shadowpaw. At first she was a little shy and quiet. " There's so much unfamiliar cats. I wonder what they think about me. ", Shadowpaw mewed nervously. " I'm sure that you will get friends here. ", Snowflake mewed in an encouraging way. " Go to apprentice's den and ask them where you can sleep. "
Shadowpaw padded to apprentice's den and stepped in carefully. She didn't see any apprentices inside the den. " Maybe they're training with their mentors ", Shadowpaw thought and sat down. Suddenly someone padded behind Shadowpaw and said: Hey! Are you the new apprentice who joined Shadowclan last morning?! Shadowpaw jumped and turned towards the cat startled. " Ye…yes I am the new apprentice ", Shadowpaw muttered. " My name's Badgerpaw. What's yours? "
" I'm Shadowpaw. Where I can sleep? ", Shadowpaw asked. " You can sleep beside me. I will show you your place when it's time to go to sleep. ", Badgerpaw told her. " Are the other apprentices training with their mentors? ", Shadowpaw asked. " Yes they are. They should come soon. ", Badgerpaw answered and started to pad towards fresh kill pile. " Are you hungry? There's some mice left for us. "
Shadowpaw didn't notice how hungry she was until now. She had eaten last evening a bird and haven't eaten anything after it. Shadowpaw padded to the fresh kill pile and took a large, fat mouse with her. She sat besides Badgerpaw to eat with him. They talked about their families, other apprentices and life in Shadowclan. Badgerpaw was nice and seemed to understand Shadowpaw although he was many moons younger than her. " You seem to be nice. Can we be friends? " Badgerpaw asked enthusiastically. "
" Of course we can. I have never really had any friends. I often played on my own or with my mom. ", Shadowpaw told. " But now I have a real friend to play with ", She said excitedly.
Shadowpaw and Badgerpaw asked their mentors if they could go to the forest exploring.
They promised to not to go too far and Boulder, Shadowpaw's mentor sent Wolfpelt, a young warrior who had received her warrior name few days ago. " Hi! Your name was Shadowpaw, right? My name is Wolfpelt. ", the young warrior asked. " I'm Shadowpaw. Nice to meet you. ", Shadowpaw greeted. Wolfpelt was only about two moons older than Shadowpaw. She was a large, dark brown tabby with a torn ear and orange eyes. When Shadowpaw and Badgerpaw walked with her in the forest she asked Shadowpaw about her parents. " My father is a Shadowclan warrior and my mother was a rogue but she joined Shadowclan and took me with her. I was born as a rogue, not as a clan cat. ", Shadowpaw told Wolfpelt. " My mother was also a rogue. Her name was Leaf. She died while giving birth my little brothers. ", Wolfpelt told her with some grief in her eyes. " One of the two kittens didn't survive but Smokekit survived. But when he was three moons old he disappeared. The warriors who were looking for him found only blood and tufts of fur which smelled like a rogue cat and a fox. Nobody knows exactly what happened there but I know for a fact that my brother is stolen from Shadowclan. "
" That's horrible! ", Shadowpaw mewed resentfully.
" Who is your father? Is he from Shadowclan? "
, Badgerpaw asked Wolfpelt. " My father is Shadowclan's leader, Brokenstar.
" WHAT! That can't be true! ", Badgerpaw yelled partly shocked, partly surprised.
Shadowpaw was shocked too. " What kind of a father he is to his kits? He makes kits apprentices way too early and sends them to dangerous battles. Perhaps he acted differently when it came to his kits. ", Shadowpaw thought. " He really is my father. " Wolfpelt mewed proudly. " He kept his mate and kits as a secret to most of Shadowclan cats. " The three young cats arrived to a small, snowy meadow surrounded by dense forest. They decided to hunt some mice and birds to make their parents and mentors proud of them.
Shadowpaw and Wolfpelt caught a big, old crow and two mice. Badgerpaw found a hibernating lizard and caught a small bird. They also wrestled and played in the snow. When sun started to go down Shadowpaw, Badgerpaw and Wolfpelt collected their prey and headed towards Shadowclan camp. Life at Shadowclan seemed to be good at first but soon things turned bad.
